Forestry Operations
Clear felling
A practice in which most trees are uniformly cut down, often used for land reclamation or timber value. We can provide a replant program.
Thinning
Thinning is the selective removal of vegetation, primarily undertaken to improve the growth rate or health of the remaining trees. In doing this the woodland becomes more accessible and open to light.
Access tracks and right of way clearance
Woodlands can often be impassable for most vehicles. By clearing a route, we can offer a hard stone track finish suitable for most vehicles. Allowing access for shoots, game keeping and recreational purposes.
Unimog and plant hire
At Woodsman tree care we run various plant machinery which can be hired along with an operator. Available to Bristol and Bath.
Tree Care
Crown Reductions
A crown reduction involves reducing the height and spread of a tree's crown. Often this process is used to keep a tree well maintained and more appealing to the eye. Also, in doing this the tree is less susceptible to wind damage. We aim to retain a natural tree shape as much as possible. Crown reduction should not be confused with ‘topping', an incorrect and harmful procedure.
Thinning and dead wooding
Crown Thinning involves selectively removing inner branches evenly throughout the tree. The main reason for this is to allow light and wind to travel through the crown without altering the trees natural shape. Dead wooding is to remove dead, dying and diseased branches within the tree crown. Its main purpose is safety, so there is little chance of any dead branches falling from the tree's canopy onto pedestrians, property or traffic.
Pollarding
Pollarding, a pruning system involving the removal of most branches of a tree. This promotes a dense head of foliage and branches primarily used to maintain trees at a predetermined height. Often used on faster growing trees however this process is not suitable for all tree species.

Hedge Trimming
Trimming
A well-maintained hedge provides a smart, aesthetic boundary to a garden, but if left unchecked, a hedge can soon lose its shape and end up casting unwanted shade. With a good pruning schedule, we can keep your hedges under control and looking great.
